Thanks to sophisticated clients, Thomas Mathews has developed a broad practice combining elements of civil and commercial litigation, regulatory, and criminal matters including white collar defence. He founded Mathews Samac LLP to better service his clients and their needs. Thomas enjoys the relationships that have grown with clients over time, allowing him to learn more about their businesses and operations, benefitting their ongoing litigation interests.
Bilingual, trained in both common law and civil law, and a member of the Bars of Ontario and Quebec, Thomas represents clients in both provinces, most often in Toronto and Montreal. He has litigated challenging matters on the Commercial List including summary judgment motions. In coordination with The Law Office of Calvin Goldman, K.C., the former head of the Competition Bureau, Thomas can represent clients in competition litigation matters. He is expanding his service offerings to include international commercial arbitration.
Thomas was appointed by provincial Cabinet to the board of Venture Ontario, whose principal business is to make and manage investments in venture capital funds and technology companies on behalf of the Government of Ontario. Passionate about business and political affairs, he has been published in The Globe and Mail, National Post, Financial Post, Montreal Gazette, The Hamilton Spectator, and Canadian Competition Law Review. Tom plays with the three-time Toronto Rugby Union champions, Bay Street Rugby Football Club, and is most at home directing the game from the scrum-half position.
